The only way to treat patients with leukemia, anemia and similar illnesses is usually by blood cells transplant. Those cells can be found in bone marrow, peripheral blood or umbilical cord blood. In contrast with Germany, where the register comprises 5% of the population, in Czech republic only about 0.75 % of the whole population signed up, which is about 50 000 people.

It does not hurt. You will sign up to the register by having a tiny amount of your blood drawn, In Czech republic, the probability that you will match with a patient is about 1%. If they choose you for the extraction of blood marrow, the whole process takes about 45 minutes and you will make it to a full recovery in about a day or two.

How can you sign up to the registry?

If you come to one of our donation centers at a given time, fill in an application form to the blood marrow donors register ( or fill it in on our website) and sign it. After that, you will sit in our armchair and a nurse will draw blood the same way, it would have been done at your GP for a blood test. Taking the 2 millilitre sample usually takes less than 5 minutes.

After that, you can expect a nice souvenir and a rewarding feeling that in the future, you might be able to help someone. If you will ever match with a patient, you will be contacted by a Czech national registry of blood marrow donors. With your permission only, a regular check up at a donnation centre will be followed by a bone marrow donation.

In 98% of cases this is done by a separation of steam cells from your blood. The method of extracting marrow from a hip bone is used hardly ever.
